Stitch Me a Story (plot, voice, cultural diversity) Shameka's English class is learning about the difference between plot and voice in storytelling and they must use a childhood book. Susie panics because she is Hmong and they don't have a written language. In the end Susie uses a pa'ndau (a "story quilt") to tell the story of her people and she receives a standing ovation. |
Rock, Paper, Scorpion (cultural oppression) The twins take a Capoeira class (Brazilian fighting/dance art form), they learn that Capoeira was developed by slaves to keep their culture alive when they were captive in Brazil. They learn about camouflage and stealth.
Put in a Good Word (origin of words) Michael is struggling with an English assignment when he is inspired by SlimStan the Sandwich Man, the rapping purveyor of the deli stand down the street. Topics include word origins, neologisms and alliteration.
We Just Want to Skate (persuasive communication) Michael, Shameka and some kids from the neighborhood band together to save the vacant lot that has turned into a skateboard park. They learn how to refute incorrect facts and present their case to the city council.
The Islamic Gandhi (Muslims in the Nonviolence Movement) The story of Abdul Ghaffar Khan is told. He was a pacifist who knew Gandhi. He came from Pakistan and was a Pashtun leader who toured and spoke for social reform, equal rights for women and nonviolence when he was not in jail. |
