HEMA (Hi-dimensional Expert Match Algorithm) is an online assessment tool that enables teachers to move beyond simple multiple-choice questions and to provide students with immediate feedback on constructed responses.

HEMA uses sophisticated statistical linguistic analyses to evaluate student answers against previously scored responses and relevant, topic-specific texts. HEMA also assesses grammar and the "fluff factor" in a response. HEMA rapidly provides a holistic, numerical score of the overall quality of an answer or a self-generated question.

Educators recognize that free text or constructed answers- as opposed to multiple choice or fill-in-the-blank answers - offer a more effective means of assessing comprehension and learning.
