| The 3D-Readers™ Starter Pack includes these 10 Science topics at two reading levels for a total of 20 modules: |
The Wave (Measuring a wave) This is the 3D-Readers training module. It is recommended that all students complete this module first. In this short text, Mom prepares Shameka for a field trip to the water park with a lesson in measuring the height and length of a wave. She also discusses a visualizing strategy, explaining how and when to use it. |

The Good, the Bad and the Tasty (bacteria and experiments) When Michael's mouth becomes infected after taking antibiotics for an ear infection, Mr. C. and his science class make yogurt to help re-balance the bacteria in Michael. Students learn about friendly bacteria, one way to keep the body's bacteria in balance, and how to conduct an experiment. |
Shameka Sees the Light (color as light waves) When Shameka's paint sample card changes color depending on the amount of sunlight in the room, Mom gives the twins a lesson on sunlight and perception. Students learn about wavelengths, the visible spectrum, and how the earth's atmosphere affects the way we see sunlight. |
Bear Necessities (genetic diversity and survival) On a trip to a state park, Michael and Shameka spot a bear running across the highway. They then meet Jeb, a wildlife biologist who is tracking black bears. Students learn about dispersal, biodiversity, genes, extinction, and survival of species. |
Good Vibrations (anatomy of the ear, how hearing works) Michael suffers some hearing loss after a loud rock concert. He learns why this happens, how to keep it from happening again, and how the ear works. |
Wise Geysers (ocean hot vents, the food chain and chemosynthesis) In order to find the answer to a riddle about a deep sea creature, the twins go to a local aquarium where they meet a salty ex-sailor. They learn how plants & animals can survive without energy from the sun. |
Skin Tight Genes (genes, traits, nature vs. nurture) Michael and Shameka partake in a research project and are tested for dyslexia. At the doctor's office they learn about DNA, genes, chromosomes, and environments. |
Atomic Fries (protons, neutrons, electrons, elements & compounds) The twins are in a restaurant salting their fries. They learn from Mom what salt is (a compound), how everything in the universe is made of atoms, and what makes up atoms. |
Cootie Wars (viruses & bacteria) Shameka is sick with a cold and insists on seeing the doctor. She learns there isn't a cure for colds (viruses) the way there are cures for infections (caused by bacteria). |
The Shocking Truth (static electricity, attraction and repulsion) Michael wonders why his socks stick to his shirt and Shameka wonders why everything metal keeps shocking her. Mr. C. uses his stash of props to explain static electricity and the balance of electrons between certain objects. |
