The NeuronFarm, LLC was founded in 2001 by Dr. Mina Johnson-Glenberg. The idea for the company began in the early 90's when Dr. Johnson-Glenberg was working one-on-one with struggling readers as an educational therapist. She realized that administering powerful remediations to a large number of learners would require the use of computers. She then dedicated herself to learning about optimal training strategies for struggling readers and to understanding the limitations of computer-based training and Artificial Intelligence.
Constructing a response is one of the most respected learning methods available. In the educational sciences this is called generativity. Decades of research support the finding that learners who generate an answer, a summary, or their own visualization remember new information better.
With funding from four federal Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants, The NeuronFarm has created software that specializes in generativity and optimal learning. The company's flagship product, 3D-Readers™, allows readers to generate questions, short answers, and colorful visualizations or “mental models”. To further enhance the pedagogy, 3D-Readers also provides immediate feedback using a proprietary automatic text scoring algorithm called HEMA™.
This unique constellation of attributes sets The NeuronFarm's software apart from other educational software and it moves learners beyond the domain of rigid, “only-one-answer fits” assessment to an instructional model that builds independent, life-long readers. |
